How the striped fabric works
The front and rear runs of banded fabric overlap at the window. As the operating system moves the material, the relationship between their horizontal bands changes. The adjustment creates a more open or covered effect across the panel.
This does not mean each section of the window can have a different band setting. The bands move as part of the connected covering. Nor does standard band adjustment make the shade top-down/bottom-up.

Choose the fabric around daylight and privacy
Light-filtering and room-darkening descriptions refer to different light-control choices. The sheer bands still play a role in the more open setting, and gaps around the installed covering affect the result.

A darker fabric color is not a substitute for checking opacity. Ask for samples or a demonstration of the selected fabric in both open and closed positions.
Check privacy at night as well as during the day
The view from inside does not prove that people outside cannot see in. Lighting direction, fabric and band position all matter. A setting that feels private in bright daylight may show more detail when the room is lit at night.
For a bedroom, bathroom or street-facing room, inspect the proposed fabric from the relevant outside sightline with the interior lights on. Use a suitably opaque closed setting or another appropriate covering when full visual privacy is required.

Compare zebra with other shade families
Zebra shades are useful when changing the band overlap is part of everyday light management. A roller shade offers a single panel in its selected fabric; a cellular shade uses a honeycomb construction; a sheer shade uses adjustable fabric vanes between sheer layers.

Decide where zebra shades fit the room
In a living room, compare the open band view with glare at the seating area. In an office, test the positions that help the screen while keeping useful daylight. In a bedroom, assess the installed light gaps as well as the fabric.
