How to Measure

3 minutes to measure

Let’s make sure an inside mount will work for your Roman shades!

Using a metal tape measure, first check your inside mounting depth. Depth is measured from the window glass or back of the opening to the front edge where the brackets will sit.

Before measuring, also make sure the top of your window opening is flat and even, with no bumps, gaps, or obstructions that could prevent the mounting brackets from sitting securely.

See Specifications for the minimum inside-mount depth and flush-mount depth required for your selected lift system.

If your window does not provide enough mounting depth, please use our outside mount instructions instead.

How to Measure:

Let’s start with the Width:

  • Measure the inside width of the window opening from left to right at three places: the top, middle, and bottom. Measure to the nearest 1/8". Write down all three measurements and use the narrowest measurement. If rounding is necessary, round down to the nearest 1/8". That is your ordering width.

Now, let’s do the Height:

  • Measure from the top inside of the window opening to the bottom sill at three places: left, middle, and right. Measure to the nearest 1/8". Write down all three measurements and use the tallest measurement. That is your ordering height.

Note: Always provide the actual window opening measurements. For inside mounts, we may make a small deduction to help ensure proper fit and smooth operation.

Measuring Roman shades for an outside mount

Before you start, decide where you want to mount your Roman shades: above the window opening, above the trim, directly on the trim, or on a door. Make sure the mounting location provides a flat and secure surface for the brackets.

See Specifications for the current size and mounting requirements for your selected lift system.

For an outside mount, your ordering width and height should include the full area you want the Roman shade to cover. Adding extra coverage beyond the window opening can help improve privacy, light control, and the finished appearance.

Above the Window (No Trim)

Width:

Decide how much coverage you want on each side of the window opening. Measure from left to right including your desired overlap. That is your ordering width.

Height:

Measure from where the top of the Roman shade will be mounted down to where you want the bottom of the shade to reach. If you have a protruding sill, measure to the top of the sill or to your preferred stopping point. That is your ordering height.

Above the Trim

Width:

Decide how far you want the Roman shade to extend beyond the window opening or trim. Measure from left to right including your desired coverage. That is your ordering width.

Height:

Measure from where the top of the Roman shade will be mounted down to your desired bottom point. If you have a protruding sill, measure to the top of the sill or to your preferred stopping point. That is your ordering height.

On the Trim

Width:

Make sure the trim provides a flat and secure mounting surface. Measure the width of the area where you want the Roman shade to sit. That is your ordering width.

Height:

Measure from the top mounting position down to where you want the Roman shade to stop. If you have a protruding sill, measure to the top of the sill or to your preferred stopping point. That is your ordering height.

Door Mount

Width:

Measure the width of the area you want the Roman shade to cover, making sure there is enough clear space for the shade and mounting hardware. That is your ordering width.

Height:

Measure from where you want the top of the Roman shade mounted down to where you want the bottom of the shade to stop. That is your ordering height.

How to Install

2 minutes to prepare

Let’s get ready to install your inside-mount Roman shades

Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need for a smooth and secure installation.

What’s included in the box:

  • Your custom Roman shade
  • Installation brackets and mounting hardware
  • Any additional accessories required for your selected lift system

What you’ll need:

  • Rechargeable drill
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Ladder (if needed)

Before installation, please check the Specifications for the size and mounting requirements of your selected lift system.

Once everything is prepared, follow the Roman Shades Installation Guide below for step-by-step installation instructions.

Installation & Setup Guides

Use the installation guide for mounting your Roman shades. If you selected a motorized lift system, use the corresponding motor and remote setup guide after installation.

Recommendations and Limitations

Please review the following information carefully before placing your order.

Important Notes

  • Custom shades may have a manufacturing tolerance of approximately ±1/8". Please enter your actual window measurements and do not make any factory deductions yourself.
  • Fabric colors may vary slightly between dye lots. For the best color consistency, we recommend ordering all shades for the same room at the same time.

Headrail & Mounting Details

  • The headrail/cassette style varies by lift system, including Continuous Cord Loop, Cordless, and Motorized configurations.
  • Before placing your order, please review the Specifications for the headrail dimensions, minimum inside-mount depth, flush-mount depth, and other mounting requirements for your selected lift system.
  • Please make sure the headrail dimensions and required mounting depth are suitable for your preferred installation method before ordering.
  • Because the headrail/cassette is covered by the Roman shade fabric, the underlying headrail hardware is supplied in white as standard.

Fold Layout & Alignment

  • Roman shades are constructed with an odd number of horizontal folds, with each fold typically measuring approximately 8–12 inches in height.
  • Because the overall shade height determines the final fold layout, shades with different heights may have different numbers of folds and slightly different fold spacing.
  • If multiple Roman shades will be installed in the same room or on the same wall, we recommend placing them in the same order and indicating the room or shade group in the Order Notes if you would like the folds aligned.
  • This allows our factory to coordinate the fold layout as closely as possible during production.
  • If you require a specific fold height or spacing range, please email us before ordering so we can confirm the available configuration.

Motorization Options

We offer three motor options depending on how you would like to control your Roman shades.

Basic Remote Motor

  • Controlled by remote only.
  • Does not support app or smart-home control.

Zigbee Motor

  • Requires a compatible Tuya Zigbee Hub, which is not sold by SenseBlinds and must be purchased separately.
  • After pairing with the Zigbee Hub, your Roman shades can be controlled through the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app.
  • Supports compatible smart-home integrations including Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings, and IFTTT.
  • Please refer to the Zigbee Motor User Manual for pairing and limit-setting instructions.

Matter Motor

  • Uses Matter over Thread for smart-home integration.
  • Compatible with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and SmartThings.
  • A compatible Matter Controller / Thread Border Router is required. Many common smart-home devices already provide this function, including selected Apple TV, HomePod, Echo, Nest Hub, Nest Wifi Pro, and SmartThings Hub/Station models.
  • No separate SenseBlinds or Tuya hub is required when your existing smart-home system already includes a compatible Matter/Thread device.

Remote Control

  • If your order includes only one motorized Roman shade, we will configure it with a single-channel remote. This model has a simple button-only design and does not include a display screen.
  • If your order includes multiple motorized Roman shades, we will use a 15-channel remote, which can control up to 15 individual motorized shades or programmed groups.
  • The 15-channel remote includes a display screen that shows the selected channel, making it easier to identify and control individual shades or groups.
  • Before shipment, our factory will pair and configure the remote control with your motorized shade(s) , so the remote will be ready to use when you receive your order.
  • You do not need a separate remote for every motorized shade. Multiple Roman shades can be assigned to different channels and can also be grouped for simultaneous control.
  • For example, multiple Roman shades in the same room can be assigned to separate channels and can also be programmed as one group for simultaneous control.
  • Please indicate your preferred remote grouping in the Order Notes, or email us after placing your order.

Rechargeable Battery & Hardwired Option

  • Motorized Roman shades use a rechargeable lithium battery.
  • A full charge typically provides approximately 6 months of use, depending on operating frequency and shade size.
  • A 3-meter charging cable is included.
  • Charging requires a standard 5V/2A USB power adapter; the wall adapter is not included.
  • We do not recommend leaving the motor continuously connected to power, as this may reduce battery lifespan.
  • If you prefer a hardwired motorized configuration, custom hardwired options are also available.
  • Hardwired installation requires a power outlet near the window. Please email us before ordering so we can confirm the appropriate motor and wiring configuration for your project.

Beautifully Structured, Raised or Lowered

Structured folds give Roman shades their distinctive look, while light-filtering fabric softens daylight and provides full privacy when lowered.

Fully lowered light filtering Roman shade softly diffusing daylight with evenly spaced horizontal folds

Lowered for Soft Light & Privacy

Lower the shade to soften bright daylight and reduce glare while keeping the room naturally illuminated. The textured fabric provides full privacy, while evenly spaced horizontal folds create a clean, structured look.

Fully raised Roman shade with one visible fabric fold remaining at the top of the window

Raised to Open More of the Window

When fully raised, the shade opens most of the window while one fabric fold remains visible at the top. This fold covers a small portion of the window, slightly reducing the open view and incoming daylight.

Good to Know: Fold Layout & Alignment

Roman shades are made with an odd number of horizontal folds, with each fold typically measuring approximately 8–12 inches in height. Because the total shade height determines the final fold layout, shades with different heights may use different numbers of folds.

For windows in the same room or on the same wall, please place the shades in the same order and let us know if you would like the folds aligned. This allows us to coordinate the fold layout during production. If you require a specific fold height or spacing range, please contact us by email before ordering.

Choose the Texture That Fits Your Space

Both fabric collections provide full privacy, but each brings a different character to the window. Choose the softer, more subtle texture of Chenille-Texture or the more defined woven look of Woven Texture to complement your space.
